Figurative Paintings

These figurative paintings consist of multiple canvases, usually three canvases. They are large shaped constructed pieces which hang from the wall onto the floor.  In the early figure paintings the figures were painted in white and Prussian blue with emphases on the surrounding environment.  Later paintings included color giving the figure more of a three dimensional quality.  These paintings are an attempt to move from the confines of the square and rectangle of traditional painting into an area occupied by the viewer.

"Pedophile"

Oil on Canvas

10' X 6'

Pedophile is about abuse that many children endure and hopefully overcome as they grow older.  This is the viewpoint of a six year old boy how has experienced abuse.  The righting on the right and left hand sides are in the handwriting of a six year old.

Pain

Oil on Canvas

10' X 6'

Pain is about a feeling that we all experience usually not a pleasant experience but something we all know about.

"Melancholy"

Oil on Canvas

10' X 6'

Melancholy is about moods we all experience sometimes inner directed.  The rooms and ajar doors represent the darkened interiors with the sense of optimism.

"Masked"

Oil on Canvas

10' X 6'

Masked is about those things we hide behind.  We all have secrets or things about ourselves that we want to keep hidden.

"Searching"

Oil on Canvas

10' X 5'

I wanted to take a classical pose and combine it with other elements to create a contemporary theme.  The right and left panels with apple and mirror create a contridictory image.  The wording "I in search of me" on the left side and the wording "Me in search of I" on the right side is done in the hand writing of a 6 year old.  The canvas flowers (lilacs) is nothing mmore than recreating the painted lilacs in the upper part of the painting.  To give it a three dimentional quality to the painting<< New text box >>

"As the Night Engulfs All..."

Oil on Canvas

9' X 5.5'

The theme for this painting began with the landscape paintingg with th large moon.  I then created the rest of the painting around the night theme.  The right side image was the first time I had incorporated textured paper which I gessoed onto the canvas.  Once again the note on the table is in the handwriting of a six year old boy,<< New text box >>

"Please Don't Touch Me"

Oil on Canvas

8' X 5.5'

In this painting I wanted it t focus around a chil's drawing.  The theme is about "abuse".  Both the left and right hand panels are painted from the viewpoint of a six year old boy.< New text box >>

"The Bride with Her Grooms Men"

Oil on Canvas

9' X 4'

I wanted to work with an interior but with a back lighting as in the stained glass windows in this painting.  I also wanted to create the contradiction of nude in church idea.  The slice of cake on the left is missing the red flower on its top so I guess you could say the piece of cake has been de-flowered.  The right hand side I wanted to create the idea of grooms men standing at the alter in their black and white tuxedos.  I needed something that sybolized men in a line in black and white.  Therefore, I chose the urinal for that image.

"The Fall of the Queen of Hearts"

Oil on Canvas

9' X 4'

The figure pose in this picture interested me when I saw a similar pose in a magazine.  I had also been looking at poster art and wanted to try and express both elementys.  The red glove was an attempt to clothe the fingure in some way.

"Chaos"

Oil on Canvas

8' X 4'

This painting went through a number of transformations.  I worked on it off and on for 2 years never feeling comfortable until now.  It is about internal and external chaos.

"It's Simply A Matter Of Geometry

Oil on Canvas

7' X '4

The topic of this painting was geometric design and construction.  I wanted to create a geometric background design and relate it to the structure of the human figure.  I enhanced the concept by creating the two side panles with geometric shapes and calculations.

"Mary Had A Little Lamb She Also Had A Fish"

Oil on Canvas

7' X 4'

This painting is from the view point of a child. The nursery rhyme, the elements and symbols as well as the words written in a child's handwriting.  It has meaning but it has no meaning.

"Waiting To Self Destruct"

Oil on Canvas

7.5' X 4'

In this painting I wanted to work with "3's".  There is the 3 canvases, 3 elements in central panel (sky, wall and grass).  Also, the 2 side panels are split into the floor, table and cup.

"In Search of Lost Innocence"

Oil on Canvas with Mesh

12' X 20'

In this painting I wanted to work really large and use multiple canvases and other elements.  I was trying to create a specific feeling by using whites and other cool colors.  The mesh acts as and simulates snow.

"Past, Present and Future"

Oil on Cavas with Blue Orb

9' X 4.5'

In this painting I wanted to create a time theme where the figure extends his arms into both side panels.  The red, blue and yellow orbs create a invisible triangular shape that traps the figure within a confined space.  But the overall constructed painting is to spread out into the viewer space.  The two orbs in each of his hands are painted images whereas the blue orb on the floor is a three dimensional constructed shape.

"Menage"

Oil on Canvas

7.5' X 3'

Because I was focusing on three canvas per painting I thought I would have a little fun with this painting and create something around the concept of the idea of ménage.  The figure is in a suggestive position and I have painted two of the chairs blue and one of them pink giving it a sexual component.

"Sunbather"

Oil on Canvas

7' X 4.5'

This painting was an attempt change color scheme in the figure.  I wanted to paint a figure in a dark room but having a light source that creates an element to create a modeling of the figure but also holds the figure between the two light sources.

"Tatooed"

Oil On Canvas

7' X 6'

This is one of my favorite paintings.  At this time I was combining my still life and figurative paintings.  This painting is three paintings combined together.  Its theme is psychological in nature.  On the table top are bottles of beer.  Also, being cut into the table is the word "hel" with the knife beginning to carve the next letter.  But will the work spell "help", "hell" or some other word.

"Untitled"

Oil On Canvas"

7' X 4'

This painting was taken from a painting I viewed at the Metropolitan Museum.  There is a painting of Venus and Cupid.  It shows Venus reclining in the foreground and Cupid in the background.  What was interesting is Cupid was urinating through a laurel wreath.  The significance is that Venus and Cupid represent love.  In the past it was common to offer newly married couples similar images at there wedding.  This became a fertility symbol for couples just beginning a life together and raising a family.  It was a hope for many children at a time where infant mortality rates were extremely high and fertility images were popular.

" Red Gloves"

Oil On Canvas

6' X 4.5'

This painting was simply an attempt to create a partially clothe female within a decorative background.  Not too sure of the outcome.

"Milliner with Colostomy"

Oil On Canvas

7' X 4.5'

This painting along with the following painting is companion pieces.  This is based on a milliner friend who had cancer and had a colostomy to save her life.  I wanted to show her profession and the requirement to be able to sew and the fact that she also has a visual scar that also required "stitching".  Some people fell it is too direct and creates an image of something people do not want to deal with.  I say it is part of life.

"Taxidermist"

Oil On Canvas"

7.5' X 4.5'

This is the companion painting to the one above painting.  It is a look at a taxidermist (my brother) and the relationship to his profession.  He also had surgery and like his animals was “stitched “back together.  This is also a painting that people have had trouble with but I feel it is just part of life.

About My Work

I have always been concerned about the way people viewed painting.   However, sculpture was the art form that drew my attention due to its three dimensional quality, enticing me into its own environment.

I wanted to do the same thing with my paintings and drawings, bring the viewer into the art works environment.  That is the reason I allow the paintings to flow onto the floor space into the viewers space.  In the still life drawings I like to hang the tables with their legs almost touch the floor, after all table legs do touch the floor.

Framed paintings always created a distance between me and the work.  Someone said to me that looking at painting was like looking through a window into someone’s private life, a voyeur.

The element of art which always drew my attention was the emotional and psychological content.  This became a way for me to express myself, often dealing with personal experiences.

“Anthropomorphic” is the best way to describe my work, giving human qualities to non-human objects. The painting “Self Portrait with Apple” is a good example.  It is a table with elements of me, paint brushes and tubes in container with my name on it as well as other objects. On the table legs are an actual pair of my old socks and shoes.

Some of my art work is “in your face” works.  Such a work is “Milliner with Colostomy” which is a look at a real individual and a part of life people want to push aside.  Not all the art work is accepted.  Maybe it touches a cord that is difficult to experience.
